The aim of the project

This project is aimed at reciprocal learnings for both Estonian students in rural areas and Tallinn University students to build a better-diverse society in which people respect and appreciate our similarities and differences regardless of background. The aim of this project goes beyond just a cultural exchange, students in rural areas should be empowered and learn from dialogues by people from different backgrounds and their personal experiences.

The general goal and the expected results

The general goal of these interactive communications is to bring another perspective from a totally different culture to the youth in Paide, and to create a short exchange program that gives students an opportunity to communicate with people from different backgrounds.

The outcome of the activity should be 1) the intercultural communication practices with people look totally different for students in Paide, and 2) empowerment for those with low socioeconomic status.

The current situation and what we are aiming to achieve

Although Estonia is famous for its minimal regional disparities in education, students in rural areas are still disadvantaged in terms of cultural and social capital like in many other countries. In addition, the farther from the city area, the less chance people embrace the opportunities to encounter new people from different backgrounds including foreigners. As a result of it, the global perspective of children from a small community is heavily dependent on their parents and family circumstances.

In order to make a small difference, we are delivering global education and interpersonal dialogue in the Human Library approach to the youth in a rural area in Estonia. The activity, the biggest part of our project, simply consists of interpersonal dialogues with the Human Library approach. The event will be organized by using the Human Library concept, where participants become a book to have a dialogue and personal conversation in a small group to empower youth and to enhance diversity by telling their stories and/or global or social issues they want to raise awareness.
